courting controversy part the first

What's the reason for instinctively wanting to help and protect the old and frail?  In an evolutionary sense - aren't they functionally useless?

"They possess wisdom beyond our years" - I hear people say.  But we have computers and recording devices.  We can have a record of everything they had to say when their minds were at their sharpest. Before they began to deteriorate.  Before they began to forget.

I'm polite enough to conceed my seat on a bus to an elderly gentleman, but I need a better reason than upbringing (which I am trying to ween myself from) and societal pressure (which I never much cared for).  I need to know that it isn't just an archaic and empty gesture meant to make me feel good about myself.

Because that's just selfish isn't it?

Hermits with busy social lives

I spend a lot of my time around people.  Hell, my job basically is people - keeping them happy, making small talk, conversating.  But it's all just an act.  I am a hermit with perfect form in social affectation.

I go through the motions - follow social cues, give all the right responses, smile, laugh and nod in all the appropriate places.  But not once, at any time during these interactions, do I honestly believe any of these people really knows, or has the slightest chance of actually understanding me.  Not for a second.

It doesn't bother me.  In fact - I like it.  I like coming home after work and reading for hours, or writing these pointless monotribes, or playing Oblivion on my Xbox 360 until I fall asleep.  I like not having to do all those silly little things for other people when I'm not at work or fulfilling public obligations with "freinds" (mere relics of something as arbitrary as personal history).

It's a silly world full of complex relationships and esoteric foibles and to be honest I now choose to have as little to do with it as possible.  I choose to seceed from the bulk of social reality.  I am only really me when there is no trace of you.  A hermit with a busy social life.

And I sometimes wonder how many of us there are...

You gotta go with what works.

Capitolism is just admitting that GREED is the underlying principle of the entire human condition.  It sucks like the collapsing black hole of hope for a better world... but it works.

girls don't like boys girls like cars and money

That's true. Sometimes. I admit many women (and girls) are into fancy cars and money. They're shallow.  But so are a lot of men. I mean, if you want to spend that much money on a car, it's probably to go fast and look good. That makes you shallow, too. And contrary to popular belief, opposites don't attract all that often. We're usually drawn to people very much like ourselves.

Now, I admit I'm not a perfect feminist. I am sexist, which is something I'd like to get over -- it's a long process. But I accept the core meaning of feminism: equality among the sexes. We're all very different: male to female; individual to individual. But we're also all made of the same stuff. Blood, tissue, bone. And though some of us appear to lack a brain, we all have one. So why should any of us be treated negatively for being one sex or another? Why should all men be considered materialistic dogs and all women gold-digging sluts? They shouldn't right?

So please understand me and don't take offense when I say, "You are an idiot if you look at me and assume that all I care about is what you drive and how much money you make just because I'm an atttractive young woman." Or, to put it in simpler words, "Fuck you, you predjuced asshole."

That was my main point but I want to add one more thing. All women do care, to some degree, about your wallet size. It's because we don't want to fully support you anymore than you want to support us.  No one wants to date someone who is deep in debt and always asking to borrow cash or expecting them to pick up the tab.

In my opinion: the best relationships include two financially independent people that go dutch or know how to say, "I'll get dinner if you get the movie."
